Looking for a Club to join? Look no further! We emphasize the fellowship that is a vital part of the Rotary experience and this is the FIRST Object of Rotary.
We meet every Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m. at the Langford Fire Hall, 2625 Peatt Road. Our program includes a talk by an informative speaker.
Our membership comprises business people and retired people living in the Westshore region of Victoria (Langford, Colwood, Metchosin, Highlands).
We are a member Club of Rotary International.
The Rotary Club of Colwood was established in 1972 and has been serving the community, and the world, ever since.
Membership in Rotary provides an opportunity for fellowship, but there is a far more important purpose to the early morning gatherings of the Colwood Club. Local and international service is always at the forefront of what Rotary seeks to accomplish.
The projects undertaken over the years have been many and varied. Drawing from a broad base of experience within the business community of the Westshore, the Rotary Club of Colwood has been able to have an influence that reaches around the world.
Some Club History...
In 2003, in co-operation with the Langford Fire Department, the Colwood Club gathered used firefighting equipment from departments around the province for use in Afghanistan. Through a co-operative arrangement with the Canadian military the equipment was delivered to the firefighters Kabul Main Fire Station. From there, items were distributed to three other substations. One shift at each station was properly outfitted with gear. This was a need the fire departments had not been able to address on their own. Besides the protection offered, being able to appear in public with the equipment has added to their pride and stature.
In 2004, another collection was made. This time the shipment included 'Bunker' gear and breathing apparatus for the Kabul Fire Department. A compressor was included in the package and converted for use on the Afghan electrical system so that air tanks could be recharged.
Three members of the Langford Fire Department went to Kabul to give instruction in the use of the equipment. Part of the expense involved in that trip was covered by the Colwood Club and events sponsored by Rotary.
Another recent project involved the shipment of hygiene kits and school supplies to Afghanistan for use by children and families there. With the assistance of crew members of HMCS Algonquin, materials were packed and loaded for transport overseas. The kits were distributed to a number of points including orphanages, Nomad, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
The Club’s local services are not restricted to Colwood. Projects are undertaken throughout the Westshore Communities. Parks and facilities for children and youth have been provided, in co-operation with other local agencies.
The Rotary Park at Juan de Fuca Rec. Centre was upgraded last year with the assistance of the Colwood Club membership during the Centennial of Rotary.
Colwood Rotary participates fully in the Rotary International Youth Exchange. The program is designed for High School students to travel, and study, in a different culture and environment. Young people are sponsored by Rotary Clubs in Canada and the United States and are assigned to a foreign country for one year. Another alternative provides the opportunity to live in a European country for a four week period in the summer.
Once againlast year, the Colwood Club sent a student abroad while accepting another student into our community and homes. Another Belmont student, Sarah Kergin, has returned from her year abroad. This year, the Club hosted Nadia Apa, from Patagonia, Argentina.
The Rotary Club of Colwood has had the distinction of having its nominees for Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships accepted as the candidates for the prestigious honour two years in a row. The Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship is valued at $25,000.00 U.S.
Rotary Clubs are operating in 166 countries and 35 geographical regions around the world. There are more than 1,200,000 Rotarians in over 31,000 clubs world-wide.
The Rotary Club of Colwood meets every Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m. in the Royal Colwood Golf Club. We are currently looking for interested business people to join them. If you are interested, please contact any active Colwood Rotarian or our membership chairman
